Author Interview: Kelly Fiore

We're excited to welcome the author of Just Like the Movies, Kelly Fiore, to Reading Lark today.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Who is your favorite movie couple?

Kelly: Wow -- just one? I think if I HAD to choose, I'd say Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo in 13 Going on Thirty. But if you ask me again tomorrow, I might have a different answer. :)

Andrea @ Reading Lark: If your novel was a cupcake, which one would it be?

Kelly: Something with a "California Girls" by Katy Perry kind of look -- a bubble-gum/cotton candy topping, with some light blue icing.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: Why do you choose to write YA?

Kelly: Because I still see things the same way I did as a teenager. I think being a teen is the most exciting time of your life and I love to capture that on the page.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Where do you find the inspiration for your novels?

Kelly: I'm not really sure how to answer that question -- I think my brain comes up with stories based on things I see. I'll watch a movie or a TV show or read an article and I'll want to capture a different story or perspective.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: It's a tradition to ask - What is your favorite bird?

KF: Owls! They look smart AND cuddly! (Just like me! :) )

About the Novel

Pretty and popular track star Marijke Monti is confident about almost everything – she’s got great friends, a great family, and she’s on her way to the State Track Championship. In fact, the only thing Marijke isn’t confident about is her relationship with Tommy Lawson.

Lily Spencer has spent her entire high school career preparing for the future – she’s participated in every extracurricular activity and volunteer committee she could. But, at home, she watches her mother go on date after date with dud-dudes, still searching for “the one.” Lily realizes that she’s about to graduate and still hasn’t even had a boyfriend.

While they live on each other’s periphery at school, Lily and Marijke never seemed to have much in common; but, after a coincidental meeting at the movie theater, Lily gets an idea – why can’t life be like a movie? Why can’t they set up their perfect romantic situations, just in time for their senior prom, using movie techniques?

Once the girls come up with the perfect plans, they commit themselves to being secret cohorts and, just like in the movies, drama ensues.
