Author Interview & Giveaway: Haunted by Lynn Carthage

We're excited to welcome the author of Haunted, Lynn Carthage, to Reading Lark today.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: How did you choose the setting for Haunted?

Lynn: Haunted is set in England, although the main character Phoebe Irving is American. I knew I needed a dark, ancient Gothic place to set it, and the U.S. is frankly too young. I invented the Arnaud Manor, whose architecture is based on Versailles—an abandoned, decrepit Versailles stuck in the middle of the woods—as Phoebe’s family’s ancestral home. They chose to move there from San Francisco…I blame them for all the troubles that ensued…

Andrea @ Reading Lark: If this novel was a cupcake, what kind would it be?

Lynn: Well, now I’m craving a cupcake. Thanks. Let’s see, a dark chocolate cupcake that has suffered over the years, akin to Miss Havisham’s wedding cake. The frosting is now rock hard, but somewhere in the middle, buried in the ruined confection, is a pocket of bloody jelly.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What is your favorite ghost story?

Lynn: For modern ghost stories, The Shining. For older ghost stories, The Turn of the Screw. Wait! I also love The Haunting of Hill House. And the story my sister made up once about a haunted piano whose ivories were really human bones.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What are three songs that would be on Phoebe's playlist?

Lynn: “Shake That Ass” by The Lovemakers, “She’ll Come Back to Me,” by Cake, and “Pretty Girls” by the Runs, all three San Francisco Bay Area bands.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: It's a tradition at Reading Lark to ask - What's your favorite bird?

Lynn: I was going to say cardinal, but my husband says they strike him as “ridiculously formal.” I’m going with raven, the undertaker of the bird world.

Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Irving has traded life in San Francisco for her stepfather’s ancestral mansion in rural England. It’s supposed to be the new start her family needs. But from the moment she crosses the threshold into the ancient estate, Phoebe senses something ominous. Then again, she’s a little sensitive lately—not surprising when her parents are oblivious to her, her old life is six thousand miles away, and the only guy around is completely gorgeous but giving her mixed messages.

But at least Miles doesn’t laugh at Phoebe’s growing fears. And she can trust him…maybe. The locals whisper about the manor’s infamous original owner, Madame Arnaud, and tell grim stories of missing children and vengeful spirits. Phoebe is determined to protect her loved ones—especially her little sister, Tabby. But even amidst the manor’s dark shadows, the deepest mysteries may involve Phoebe herself…
